Maximizing Your Site and Its Resources

From a tiny city lot to an expansive plot of land out in the countryside, maximizing your site and its resources will provide you with a wealth of resources to live better, richer, and reduce your footprint on the earth.  Let’s look outside and see what our backyards can provide.

Assess the positive and negative aspects of your site.  Is it shady or sunny?  Soil too wet or dry?  Ground is rocky, dry and hard to grow plants?  Flat or steep?  There may be zones on your site with extremely different conditions.  Your architect, landscaper, or landscape architect can help you draw up a map of your site to evaluate the conditions.  Think about how each of these zones might work together to give you the most efficient use of your site.  Once you have created a plan of your site, it is time to start thinking about how you can use your site to its fullest.  Here are some ideas to explore (click on the topics below to learn more):

Rainwater harvesting

-Rain gardens

-Backyard gardening and container gardening

-Drought tolerant landscaping

-Composting

-Wind power

There are many other ways that you can use your site to its utmost.  What other ways do you utilize your property and the resources?  We’d love to hear from you about what works and what doesn’t.
